Read measurements, not marketing labels
“Small,” “medium,” and “large” are not standardized. Check total length, insertable length, diameter, circumference, weight, and the widest point. Product photos can distort scale, so compare measurements with an object you already understand.
Material transparency
Manufacturers should identify the body-contact material clearly. Common nonporous choices include silicone, stainless steel, borosilicate glass, and some hard plastics. Words such as “jelly,” “realistic,” or “skin-like” describe appearance or texture, not a precise material. Avoid products with missing or contradictory material information.
Shape and flexibility
Straighter, tapered shapes can be easier for beginners to control. Curves may create more focused pressure but fit differently from person to person. Very firm products transmit pressure directly; flexible products may feel gentler but can be harder to guide. Texture increases sensation and may also require more lubricant and more careful cleaning.
Base and intended use
For any anal use, choose a product specifically designed for it with a wide, non-negotiable flared base or another retention feature that cannot enter the body. A suction cup is not automatically the same as a safely proportioned base. Do not use a product internally in a way the manufacturer does not intend.
Cleaning and storage
Follow the maker’s current instructions. Water resistance, motors, seams, adhesives, coatings, and embedded components change what cleaning methods are appropriate. Wash before first use and after use, dry completely, and store away from dust, direct sunlight, extreme heat, and incompatible materials. Do not share a product without an appropriate barrier and cleaning approach.
Lubricant compatibility
Use enough compatible lubricant to reduce friction. Water-based lubricant works with many materials, but product instructions control. Some silicone lubricants can affect some silicone products. If guidance is unclear, ask the manufacturer or use a small compatibility test away from the main body-contact area.
First-time checklist
- Exact insertable dimensions are known.
- The body-contact material is fully disclosed.
- The firmness and texture suit your experience.
- The base and handle match the intended use.
- Cleaning, lubricant, storage, and warranty instructions are clear.
Go slowly and stop for pain, bleeding, loss of sensation, or other concerning symptoms. Seek qualified care when needed.
