Start with the experience you want
The best first product is not the most powerful or expensive one. Begin with a simple question: do you want external stimulation, internal stimulation, a product for partnered use, or something that supports comfort and exploration? Choosing the goal first narrows the field and keeps marketing language from driving the decision.
Prioritize clear material information
Look for a manufacturer that clearly identifies every body-contact material. Common nonporous options include silicone, ABS plastic, stainless steel, and borosilicate glass. A vague description such as “jelly,” “real-feel,” or “rubber-like” is not a complete material disclosure. If a seller cannot tell you what touches the body, choose a better-documented product.
Material is only one part of safety. Inspect the product before each use, follow the maker’s cleaning directions, and stop if you notice cracks, peeling, corrosion, swelling, a persistent odor, or other damage.
Choose manageable size and controls
For a first internal product, modest dimensions and a tapered shape are usually easier to understand than an oversized design. Check actual measurements rather than relying on photos. For powered products, look for controls you can operate without looking, a clear off switch, and enough range to start gently.
Think about cleaning before buying
Water resistance, seams, charging ports, and removable parts affect cleaning. “Splashproof” is not the same as submersible. Follow the exact water-resistance rating and cleaning instructions supplied with the product. Do not boil, bleach, or place a product in a dishwasher unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
Check lubricant compatibility
Water-based lubricant is a common starting point because it is compatible with many product materials, but always check the manufacturer’s instructions. Some silicone lubricants may affect some silicone products. Patch testing on a small area and following the maker’s guidance are safer than assuming compatibility.
Review merchant policies
Before ordering, check shipping privacy, the billing descriptor, warranty, defect process, and return policy. Intimate products are often nonreturnable once opened except for defects. Purchase from a seller that identifies the manufacturer and provides clear support information.
A sensible first-buy checklist
- The intended use is clear.
- All body-contact materials are identified.
- Dimensions are comfortable for your experience level.
- Controls and charging are straightforward.
- Cleaning and lubricant instructions are available.
- The merchant explains privacy, warranty, and returns.
Start slowly, communicate clearly with any partner, and stop if something hurts or causes numbness, bleeding, or another concerning symptom.
